Making Financial Control Easy

The right tools for the job

“A commercially practical course rather than a typical financial course which is only technical and descriptive.”
Nicolas Tardieu, American Power Conversion Corporation.

Every business is different. That means tailoring our services to suit you. These are just a few examples of ways in which we've been able to help businesses maximise their potential.

Client Land Securities Plc Greene King Plc John Sisk and Son Ltd
Training Objectives To improve the financial and commercial understanding of people at all levels within this FTSE 100 company and provide them with relevant techniques to enable them to apply knowledge gained from the training to their own areas of the business. To work with a mixed group of Managers to increase their commercial knowledge and use of financial information, some of whom have the responsibility for negotiating loans with customers. To provide Directors and their direct reports with a greater financial and commercial awareness through an interactive, competitive, challenging yet enjoyable training intervention.  Unusually, we were asked specifically not to tailor the materials to the industry as it was felt people at this level should already understand it and that a more general course would be beneficial.
FST&C Approach and Solution

We performed a large scale training needs analysis to determine the specific requirements and objectives for the training.  It quickly became apparent that there were a variety of needs that couldn't be met through a single solution.

As a result of the TNA, Land Securities are now able to offer eight different finance modules to their employees which means that each person can select the module(s) that are relevant to their own role and objectives rather than attending a long course where only a few of the topics are of use.  Each module has been highly tailored to the Land Securities business.

FST&C immersed themselves in the culture and ways of working of the organisation through several meetings with key members of the finance team. The result was the design of a very specific training workshop using examples pertinent to the brewing industry and in a language that delegates could understand. The workshop was jointly delivered with one of the Greene King Finance Managers.

Since this, FST&C have continued to work with Greene King designing and delivering highly tailored workshops for each of the three divisions.

Two of our Trainers worked together to develop and jointly deliver a course centred on a case study that required huge amounts of participation from all delegates and giving significant time for debate and discussion.

The group was split into two teams who were competing against each other to come up with the best solutions to the various questions posed to them throughout the course.  Each element required delegates to really dig into the finances as well as considering wider commercial issues, both skills which are incredibly important for people working at this level.

Outcome

The eight modules are being offered within the business on a rolling programme.  Several hundred people have now attended one or more of the modules and despite being in a difficult climate for commercial property development and management, the business continues to show good financial results.

The Managers that attended the workshops now have a solid understanding of the workings of profit and loss accounts, balance sheets and cash flow.

They have a clear idea of how they compare to their competitors using key ratios and understand how their daily actions and decisions can impact the accounts.

At the end of the course, everyone felt that they had significantly improved their financial and commercial awareness.  They felt that the course had been challenging but immensely worthwhile.

The course has since been modified to work well at other areas within the business.
